There’s only one other car I know of with a roof pillar that big...
Mazda wore it better though. It looks pretty good.

No it looks bad, we can’t sit back and accept these injustices

I think that new
Mazda 3 hatch looks hideous. That back pillar looks awful, not to mention the lack of visibility it provides.

I like the 3-hatch. It might look better (and have better visibility) if they had wagoned it up though.

The Datsun Cherry X1R doesn’t agree with that!

Did someone say “giant C-pillar”?
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:21 |

Mazda should bring back the wrap around rear window that was part of their design language for decades.

t least the not-a-Cruiser can wheel..

are you firmly in “not a land cruiser” camp?

If Mazda called this a shooting brake, people would be wetting their pants over this
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:27 |

There’s a zillion ways to deal with a giant C-pillar. Co-opt it, own it, hide it, flaunt it, style it in...
Particularly if you’re Mazda. There’s a history:
The most important part of Pillar Club, though?
You need to have arrived there on purpose. Mazda looked like they did it on purpose with the 120A, but the new 3 looks like carelessness.

Hope it’s not a new trend.

I’ve never driven one, but how does one ‘wheel a vehicle that large with practically zero outward visibility? My Cherokee with it’s light and airy greenhouse makes for great trail vision.

lol, shhh,
I have to pretend
not to
like them because they’ve been veto’d by she who makes responsible car purchases.. otherwise.. oh man, it would go sideways..
plus I get a kick out of the ‘ not a cruiser’ purists and their wacky beliefs..

Carefully I hope, unless you are this guy;

Ahhhh..... the “close your eyes and floor it” technique! Brave!
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:37 |

But the 120A is a Datsun, so that has more to do with Nissan than with Mazda I’d say ;p

Am I the only one that sees a lot of Brera styling cues here?
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:39 |

ah, I thought I was the only one who saw this similarity in the 2 cars
![]() 11/28/2018 at 14:40 |

This is not it’s most flattering angle, that’s for sure. If they’d made the roof just a bit longer and less curved it would have been nicer (a small wagon/long hatchback like the Opel Signum)

dang straight. I love teasing the cruiser museum curator about their inclusion of the FJC in the collection. Whenever they give the tour they make sure to mention that its not “really” a land cruiser but...
right.

Sorry, brain failure. Second wednesday in a row I’ve been somewhat befogged.

Had a brainfart moment, but Mazda had some beefy pillars right alongside Datsun. ‘Twas the style.

I dug up some choice Big Pillars from Mazda to reply with...

I want to like it. I really do. But I just don’t. It looks like garbage.

No worries, can happen to the best of us! But you’re right, M azda also had some beefy pillars, as did Simca and Renault. It really was a thing of the times.

Some 929s had a very curious C-pillar treatment. Must be practically unique:
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:41 |

It’s because it’s Mazda that there isn’t universal hatred for it. If Honda or Toyota had done it, there’d be pitchforks and torches.
![]() 11/28/2018 at 15:42 |

That’s pretty unique indeed!
![]() 11/28/2018 at 16:24 |

It’s not that the pillar is so huge in itself, it’s the combination of the sloped back window, the pillar, and the back door windows kicking up before the pillar to add to the sheetmetal. It’s like a swoopier flattened out Volvo XC40.
Either that or a chunked up Ferrari FF.

Ah yes that too

Whoops forgot that

My thoughts exactly. Good looking car until you get halfway down the rear doors.

It would look a lot better if they stuck a fake chrome vent, or faux gas cap, or logo badge on the side of it. Kind of break up the expanse of painted metal.
